Wedding Cake 101: Expert Tips on Choosing Your Perfect Cake
Sometimes choosing your wedding cake isn’t always a ‘piece of cake’… or at least until now. I’ve searched through the web to find what expert bakers would tell future brides so read through the following tips and you’ll be on your way to choosing the perfect cake for your special night.
Set the Budget
Set a budget straight from the beginning and be open with your cake decorator. It will make the process much easier and smoother for both parties.
Get Creative!
“The days of traditional white flower covered cakes are gone,” say’s Anmar Robinson of CRUMB – Bespoke Suffolk Cakes. “These days a wedding cake can be a true symbol of a couple’s personality. Wedding cakes come in all shapes and sizes – they can match the theme or colour of the day or the couple’s favourite hobby. Even the flavours can be customised to suit the couples personal tastes.”
Taste, Taste, TASTE!
As you start setting up appointments, find out when each baker’s next tasting is scheduled. At tastings, clients are invited into the bakery to sample exemplary cakes, ask questions, and review portfolios. This is an excellent opportunity to meet bakers and fully understand the range of their abilities.
Helping Hand vs. Additional Stress
Before accepting an offer from a friend or family member to make your wedding cake, ask to see their work and taste the cakes. Be honest with them, without offending them, instead of feeling sorry on your big day.
Visit the Bakery More Than Once
Sharon Castro always likes to meet couples face-to-face. “I find that way you can get a feeling as to whether they are on your wavelength. You’ve got to feel comfortable with each other”. Jean agrees: “Visiting the premises enables you to be sure you’re dealing with a professional. After you’ve booked your cake you may not meet the maker again until your wedding day. You need to have absolute faith in them.”
Think BIG
“Want a big cake on a little budget? It’s possible with a few creative cheats,” says Anmar. “Big cakes are very popular at the moment and often form the center piece of the whole reception with the flowers and decor chosen to match the cake. I can create up to three or four dummy layers, topped with another three or four layers of real cake on top of that.”
Be Cautious of Fresh Flowers
Jean advises: “Be careful if you plan to top your cake with fresh flowers, some are poisonous and many will have been sprayed with chemicals. Ensure that your florist can guarantee safety. Always liaise between the florist and your cake maker regarding delivery and decoration on the day and ensure that you tell your florist the size of the cake so that she knows exactly what to expect.”
Cake Trend Inspiration
“Matching the bride’s dress to the cake is a big trend this season. We’ve matched the ruffle on a bride’s dress to the cake. We’ve also matched specific pieces of heirloom jewelry on the bride to the wedding cake.”
“We’re also seeing a return to classic butter cream frosting — the original style of frosting that looks more realistic and has a richer flavor than the modern fondant frosting. As for shapes, ovals are really this season’s hottest shift. Round is traditional, square can be a lot of fun, but an oval-shaped cake draws a lot of attention and allows us more room upon which to create.”
Confirm Everything in Writing
Always get the admin sorted. Ensure that the design of your cake and any quote is confirmed in writing, specifying in precise detail what you are expecting. Check that the cost of knife and/or stand hire, delivery and set up are included if you need it and that there is no risk of hidden extras. Confirm how your cake will be delivered and that your cake maker will set it up for you on the day.

5 Fun Party Ice Breakers to Get The Party Started
Party ice breakers are always a great addition to an type of event whether it be an engagement party, bridal shower, birthday party, etc. As a host you want all your guests to feel comfortable with each other and not have any guests in the corner because they don’t know anyone. Ice breakers will insure that your party doesn’t become boring, where everyone stands around in little groups complaining. It’s time to get everyone involved and really make your occasion a memorable one!
Check out these 5 ice breakers that will really get your party started!
Truth or Lie?
Each person writes their name on a 3×5 card and 4 facts about themselves, one of which is a lie. Cards are turned into the leader. A paper is passed out which reflects the name of all the guests. The leader then reads the name of a person on a 3×5 card and that person’s list of facts aloud. The rest of the group writes down the one thing that is a lie by that particular person’s name. whoever gets the most right, is the winner.
Have You Ever?
Simply ask your guests these questions (or questions you make up your own) and the answers alone will be entertaining! Whoever gets the most points..wins!
- Locked yourself out of the house (20 points)
- Lost any of your family while shopping (15 points)
- Put something in the refrigerator that doesn’t belong there (30 points)
- Turned white clothes a different color in the wash (35 points)
- Needed to lay on the floor to zip up your jeans (45 points)
- Gone away and realized that you left the iron or coffee pot on, so you come all the way home, and find it was really off (50 points)
- Had a zipper or strap break when you were out somewhere (15 points)
- Put on a pair of stocking with a run in them and pretended it just happened (10 points)
- Put on two different socks or shoes and not realized it until you were out (75 points)
- Taken a bath and left the towels in the closet (20 points)
- Called someone on the phone and forgot who you were calling (40 points)
- Called any member of your family by another name (20 points)
- Put your heel though the hem of a dress (20 points)
- Remembered an appointment after it was too late (15 points)
- Been ready to bathe and found no hot water (25 points)
- Fallen up the stairs (35 points)
- Gone shopping and discovered you didn’t bring any money with you (50 points)
- Drive away from somewhere while a member of your party wasn’t in the car (35 points)
- Locked your keys in the car (10 points)
- Got into the car to go somewhere and forgot where you were going (20 points)
- Put something in the oven to bake and forgot about it (35 points)
- Woke up in the morning and didn’t know where you were (40 points)
Human Bingo
Before your party make up a grid sheet or list with varied personal characteristics in each square or line aka Bingo Card. Characteristics might be: sings in shower; been to Europe; never had a speeding ticket; watches a soap opera; has met a famous person; wears thong underwear; plays the lottery; speaks at least three languages; etc. Hand out the bingo cards to your guests and have them go around and collect unique signatures of guests who have those characteristics. The first person to get all (or the most) squares filled in wins!
What’s In Your Pocket?
Another fun give away game that gets guests involved by asking them to produce all the different items from their purses and pockets. The first person or group to produce the item wins the prize. This game is best played by breaking guests into 3 or 4 groups. You can also use a point system. If playing in groups, the first group to produce the item gets the point and at the end of the game, the group with most points wins!
Sample list of things to ask for include:
- Key chain with 10 keys or more
- Bookmark
- Pen with a chewed cap
- Coin with a specific date
- Family picture
- Store receipt
- Stamp
- Paperclip
When planning your party, put together your list of items, include a few that will get people interacting and laughing. It not only puts people at ease, but gives them something to talk about even after the game is over.
What’s That Hum?
Pass out index cards with songs written on them. You will need to write each song twice, on two different cards. Pass out the song titles, one to each guest and tell them they must hum their song while they search for the other guest that is humming the same song. Winners are the two guests that find each other first.
Finding ‘Celebrity’ Love!
Make a list of celebrity couples or well known iconic couples (Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, Lucy and Ricky etc.). List each half of the couple on separate pieces of paper. Choose as many couples as you have guests. When each guest arrives at the dinner, secure the name of the celebrity on their back. The goal is for each guest to find their other half. First, they must figure out who they are by asking yes or no answer questions. When they guess correctly, they can place their identity on their chest. When both people have their identity’s figured out and find each other, they win!
With these fun ice breakers your guests will remember your occasion for years to come!

Wedding Planning Tips from Moments of Elegance
Planning a wedding can be a bit stressful, can’t it? But it doesn’t have to be, really it doesn’t! We swear! We are here to make sure you have the perfect day…the day you have always dreamed of ever since you were a little girl.
Here are some little ways you can make your big day super special:
Share a Secret
Have a little secret between the 2 of you that day whether it be wearing matching underwear or having something “just between you” in your hand, bouquet, pocket or even a special look and when ever you get nervous you look at your partner with “the look” and you’ll both know what each other are thinking about. Some people may catch it and wonder what it’s all about but it’ll be “your little wedding day secret” that helped you get through the day together… depending on each other at the beginning of your life as a family.
Best Man 101
The duties of a best man include being an assistant to the groom and the head of the groomsmen; he also is in charge of the bachelor party, getting the groom to the church, paying the officiant, signing the marriage license, holding the rings and giving a toast at the reception. He has a lot of responsibility and its also traditional to give him a nice gift at the rehearsal dinner to say thank you for all of his hard work!
Choosing Wedding Favors & Decorations
When deciding what wedding favors and decorations to use, there are some questions you can ask to help you choose:
Do you want something that will feature your names and wedding date?
Do you want something that will be fun to play with at the reception?
Do you want to give something that´s useful?
Do you want something that will last for a long time?
Do you want something that will be part of the table decorations?
Do you want a favor that will express both of your interests or personalities?
You’ll also want to find the BEST Wedding Favor company to work with, like Moments of Elegance.
Congrats from The President
Send one of your wedding invitations to the President, Pope, and the Queen of England and be on the lookout for a special wedding surprise back from them. Be sure to send their invites out early.
Things to ask your wedding planner
How long they have been in business?
How many weddings they have organised.
Can they provide references?
How do they charge, hourly, fixed fee or % of your wedding budget? Do you feel comfortable with this?
Do they accept commission from suppliers is it passed on to the client?
Do they operate on a full time basis or do they have another job?
Ensure they have public liability insurance.
Do they have a portfolio for you to look at?
