Writing Your Own Wedding Vows: Tips from a Professional Writer

Writing Your Own Wedding Vows: Tips from a Professional Writer

You may feel like you are a little out of your element when trying to write an expressive, memorable piece for your wedding vows. It is not as impossible as you would think. You just need to heed these 3 basic tips for writing your own wedding vows.

Tell Your Love Something He Didn't Know

He thinks he knows everything… but does he? Your wedding vows is the perfect place to reveal a truth to him that he may not have ever known. Now when I say truth, I don't mean the fact that you kissed another guy during your breakup two years ago. Keep that to yourself at the moment!

The truth I am talking about is an event, or a moment that occurred between you two that you secretly cherish. For example, the moment you fell in love with him. Maybe there was a moment when he was sitting at his desk, looked over at you and smiled. Tell him about it in your real voice. There is no need to try to be technical and proper in your speech. Most tips for writing your own wedding vows will require you to just be yourself.

This is what you do when you want to make him cry.

Talk About Him, Not Just You

Whenever you are writing your own wedding vows, you want to talk more about your significant other than yourself. Don't talk about you, and how you never thought you would meet someone, and how you can't believe you finally have your dream wedding, or how you had such a hard time writing your vows.

Talk about him instead. Tell him how wonderful he is, and how he makes you laugh. Tell him all of the things about him that made you fall in love with him.

Tips for Writing Your Own Wedding Vows: Add Humor

By this time in your wedding vows may have the waterworks flowing among your crowd. So to break up the tears, add a little humor to your vows to get everyone back in good spirits.

It doesn't have to be a one liner or something really witty, just a little something that you and your close family can relate to about you and your hubby. For example, you can make a quick joke about you never thought he could look so good in a tuxedo, that kind of thing. You would have to have a crowd that is as cold as ice for your guests to not at least chuckle along with you.

Don't go overboard with the humor though. This isn't a stand up comedy routine, it is your wedding vows. Here is a humor tip: try not to laugh too much at your own jokes.

You can be both a succesful writer and speech deliverer if you follow these basic tips for writing your own wedding vows—at least for one day.
